NASCAR puts you in the driver’s seat (twitter.com)

NASCAR drivers have covered a lot of ground this year — and they’ve done it on Twitter. While @JimmieJohnson was 41,000 feet in the air, he hosted a live chat with fans. When the top Sprint Cup racers took a trip to the White House, they documented every step of their journey. During the Daytona 500, @keselowski found himself stopped on the track during a fire, and shared the view from the driver’s seat. And when you watch @KaseyKahne make his way around the track, you’ll see a hashtag on the back of his car.

It’s clear that Twitter and NASCAR are a great match, and we’re working with NASCAR to bring fans even closer to the track.

On June 10, while the drivers are racing in the Pocono 400, you’ll be able to get closer to the action as it unfolds on the track with a special experience around the #NASCAR hashtag. During the race, we’ll curate accounts from the NASCAR universe and surface the best Tweets and photos from the drivers, their families, commentators, celebrities and other fans when you search #NASCAR on Twitter.com.

Time to go to work. twitter.com/KyleBusch/stat…

— Kyle Busch (@KyleBusch) April 27, 2012

We’ll have more to share about our relationship with NASCAR in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, this weekend you can follow the All-Star race and festivities via these accounts among others:

@NASCAR
@JimmieJohnson
@keselowski
@KyleBusch
@KaseyKahne
@JeffGordonWeb
@KevinHarvick

Cheering along with fellow fans during the biggest sporting events used to require being there in person, or at least heading to the nearest sports bar. Now, Twitter brings you closer to the roar of the crowd — and the roar of the engines.

Spotify Exclusive – An interview with the The Temper Trap (spotify.com)

Hello Temper Trap, how the devil are you?
Lorenzo Sillitto: We’re very good, thank you! In the middle of a three-week press junket…
Dougy Mandagi: We’ve been doing press for the last three weeks and we’re off to Paris tonight.

So you’re due some time off before doing anything else?
Joseph Greer: No! Dougy flies to Cuba to finish a video tomorrow then on Monday we start rehearsing for the tour.

Which I see begins in the UK in Cornwall – is that a surfer thing?
LS: No, it’s just a place we’ve never been.
JG: And we hear there’s some great food down there…

Everyone likes food right?
DM: Oh, well we certainly do!

Your new album, The Temper Trap, was written straight after you came off touring the last one for two years. Can you write on the road?
LS: Only one song was, we actually write a lot better in the studio.
JG: We like to be uninterrupted! We can’t write in sound-checks or when we’re meant to be doing other things.
DM: Touring makes you a better musician as you soak up so many new experiences, but we like to be in the studio when we get to work on those experiences. Basically, we like to be surrounded by our gear.

The first two tracks we’ve heard have been quite different to each other. Rabbit Hole is kind of gentle, while Need Your Love is kind of not at all gentle.
JG: Ha! Well, Rabbit Hole is four years old. It didn’t make the last album, so in a way it’s the old us.
DM: While Need Your Love is definitely the new us.

Why did you release the single to Spotify first?
LS: It felt like great way to get people interested in us again. The single showcases both sides of who we are; it’s a gateway in for people.
JG: People often tell us about hearing our music on Spotify or in films or TV shows. It’s great that there are these new ways for people to hear our music.
DM: All bands need alternative ways to reach people now – it’s not just about selling records now so having our music in a film or on Spotify is a fresh way for people to discover us.

What should Temper Trap fans know about this second album?
LS: They should know we went in with a completely blank slate.
JG: All we really knew is that we wanted to write the best songs we possibly could.

Do you have your own individual favourite songs?
LS: For me it’s Leaving Heartbreak Hotel. Dougy builds up these amazing layered vocals and there are all these intertwining guitar parts. I also really like how it grows from this minimal electro start.
JG: I really like The Sea Is Calling. The lyrics really speak to me. It’s one of those songs that you can take your own thing from, but it could still have an impact on anyone.
DM: My choice is Dreams. It has a lot of different layers of harmonising and drones and monotony – it’s hypnotising. People associate monotony with things that are boring, but it’s a good thing! Dreams is kind of shoe-gazey and I was never a shoe-gazey sort of guy, but this really is!

As professional musicians, do you know what the greatest record ever made is?
LS: I would vote for George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. There’s just so much in there to enjoy.
JG: The one I love right now is Murder Ballads by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The songs and stories are so raw and cool; it’s a very affecting record.
DM: It’s got to be the first Strokes album. I played that for a year and a half when it first came out and I never once got bored of it. It’s an aural orgasm – an eargasm! – over and over again and the songs are short you never get a chance to get bored.

The Groupon Guide to: Preventing Summertime Brain Atrophy (groupon.com)

When students leave school for the summer, or for the “long summer” of adulthood, their brains begin to leak knowledge, eventually decaying into useless, wet orbs. Try these tips to keep your brain active while you’re not in school:

Read More: Reading can transport you to another world. To avoid becoming disoriented about what world you’re in, only read emails and text messages that you yourself wrote.

Learn about Local History: You may have passed by a certain bridge, horse, or national monument every day but never taken the time to find out its historical significance. You’ll be shocked to find out how many of your town’s old buildings were formerly inhabited by an important historical traitor or Bill Gates.

Turn Everything You Do into a Word Problem: If you’re on a train that’s traveling 50 mph and your spouse is in your truck traveling 75 mph, how long will it take you to catch up with them and convince him/her to take you back?

Learn a New Skill: Take up woodworking, weaving, or masonry. When your brain does inevitably harden into a dense, lifeless rock, you’ll be glad that you taught your hands a real skill.

Urbanspoon Travel Guide: London (urbanspoon.com)

Tower of London

Tower of London photo by Kate

For this edition of the Urbanspoon dining guide we are travelling to merry old England – London to be exact. We asked for guidance from two Londoners: one of our top bloggers, Laissez Faire, who has published 94 reviews (and has wish-listed a whopping 208 more restaurants!) and Gino, an Urbanspoon Prime member who’s written more than 50 restaurant reviews, posted 125 pictures on Urbanspoon, and is a self-proclaimed “culinary open-minded Italian based in London and travelling around the world.”

Opera Tavern

Opera Tavern photo by Grumbling Gourmet

For the tourist in all of us, Laissez Faire suggests Opera Tavern and Clos Maggiore in Covent Garden, a former fruit and vegetable market that is now a popular shopping and tourist site.

However if you’re more interested in mixing and mingling with London’s most stylish citizens check out 10 Greek Street or Ducksoup in the Soho neighborhood.

Laissez Faire also recommends Amoul in Maida Vale (a great brunch location) or Odette’s in Primrose Hill.  Both of these restaurants may be a little off the beaten path, but the meal is worth the effort.

If you’re travelling in London, you probably want to experience an authentic British pub serving traditional English dishes, so Gino suggests the Great Queen Street as a great place to start.  Also as you hop from one neighborhood to the next, Gino suggests ducking into any Gaucho Grill with 11 locations spread all over central London for “simply the best fillet steak in the capital.”

Viet Grill

Feeling more adventurous than bangers and mash? Travel into any one of the amazing ethnic neighborhoods London has to offer.  Gino points out two gems: Shoreditch/Hackney with over 20 Vietnamese restaurants along the road (favorite hot spot is Viet Grill), and a variety of proper Turkish houses – try out Mangal Ocakbasi.

Now that you have all of your restaurants selected, what will you do between meals? Fiona, another expert Urbanspoon diner, recommends a walk through one of London’s well-known markets, Bermondsey Street. “Bermondsey Street itself is full of good restaurants while it sits in between Borough Market and Maltby Street (each have their own restaurants but are better known for markets).”

There are so many amazing food options, from pubs to fine dining, that you may need to extend your holiday!

Upcoming London-Area Events

RAW – The Artisan Wine Fair (May 20)

Old Truman Brewery, London

This event will feature a wide variety of exciting artisan food stalls, providing visitors with the perfect accompaniment to the 800 wines on offer at the fair. Ducksoup, the Soho bistro, is hosting a pop-up café and visitors can also enjoy posh hotdogs with proper sausages by Hoxton Beach. There will also be a selection of stalls from Maltby Street market and Borough Market’s Elliot’s Café will be hosting an oyster shucking stand.

The Real Wine Fair (May 20-22)
B1, Victoria House, London

The inaugural Real Wine Fair is a wine tasting event, celebrating skilled individuals who work organically or biodynamically in the vineyards and winery. Three leading London restaurants, Ottolenghi, The Modern Pantry, and Morito, will provide a spread of delicious tapas-style dishes for the Real Wine Café.

Great British Food Festival (June 4-5)
Walton Hall and Gardens, Warrington

This year, the Great British Food Festival is a great big, traditional, British summer party. There’ll be games and activities for the kids, balloon races, bake-offs, bunting, excellent live music, and a fantastic array of food and drink from our exhibitors. Dress in red, white, and blue.

New tailored suggestions for you to follow on Twitter (twitter.com)

Every day, hundreds of thousands of people sign up for Twitter to get closer to the things they care about — friends, businesses, celebrities, news and information from all over. If you’ve used Twitter for awhile, you know it can take some effort to find and follow the accounts that really reflect your interests. If you’re signing up for Twitter for the first time, we want that process to be easy and fast.

Currently, when new users come to Twitter, we show them all almost the same suggestions for what or who to follow. That isn’t ideal. Since you have individual interests, you should get individual suggestions. After all, even though millions of people love Justin Bieber, FC Barcelona or Kim Kardashian, not everyone using Twitter may want to follow them. A football fan in Italy who loves to travel may want to follow @chiellini, @walksofItaly and @nytimestravel. An aspiring chef who loves to laugh can follow @epicurious, @seriousrecipes and @SteveCarell. And a mom whose son is traveling in Australia can feel connected to him and keep up with the latest news where he is by following @smh.

To make it easier and faster for everyone to get started on Twitter, we’re beginning some experiments with tailored suggestions in a number of countries around the world. The first experiment will show new users a list of accounts that we recommend you follow, alongside a timeline filled with Tweets from those accounts. If you’re part of the experiment, you’ll see a Twitter experience that’s relevant to you right when you sign up. (Of course, you can always choose to not follow the suggested accounts that don’t interest you.)

New users may see a list of tailored suggestions (left) and a timeline with Tweets from those accounts (right) as they sign up for an account.

New users may see a list of tailored suggestions (left) and a timeline with Tweets from those accounts (right) as they sign up for an account.

If you’re a current user, you may see tailored suggestions in Who to follow so you can constantly find interesting and relevant accounts that are new to you. In both cases, we hope it’s effortless for the Italian football-and-travel fan to follow @chiellini, @walksofItaly and @nytimestravel. To see which accounts we’d recommend for you, visit our preview page.

Current users may see tailored suggestions in “Who to follow”.

These tailored suggestions are based on accounts followed by other Twitter users and visits to websites in the Twitter ecosystem. We receive visit information when sites have integrated Twitter buttons or widgets, similar to what many other web companies — including LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube — do when they’re integrated into websites. By recognizing which accounts are frequently followed by people who visit popular sites, we can recommend those accounts to others who have visited those sites within the last ten days.

As always, we are committed to providing you with simple and meaningful choices about the information we collect to improve your Twitter experience. For those who don’t want to tailor Twitter, we offer ways to turn off this collection. As the Federal Trade Commission’s CTO, Ed Felten, mentioned earlier today, we support Do Not Track (DNT), which is reflected in our privacy policy as one of the ways you can indicate your preference. If you have DNT enabled in your browser settings, we will not collect the information that enables this feature, so you won’t see any tailored suggestions. We hope that our support of DNT highlights its importance as a privacy tool for consumers and creates even more interest and wider adoption across the web.

Additionally, new users will see an option to “Tailor Twitter based on my recent website visits” along with a link to “Learn more” when they create an account on Twitter.com. Current users will see a new “Personalization” section in account settings, with the same option to tailor Twitter. Of course, you can disable these options at any time, which will stop the collection of information for the feature and remove any tailored suggestions we have for you. You can even choose to turn off tailored suggestions from the preview page (which shows some suggestions we’d make for you).

Every day, experienced Twitter users are brought closer to the things they care about in unique, profound ways. Today’s experiment in providing tailored suggestions lets novice users go from zero to pro faster and more easily than ever before. So even if you’re not a football-loving Italian who wants to travel the world, we hope this experiment immediately makes Twitter yours, and you can start getting closer to the things you care about with just a few clicks or taps.
